Editor’s note: An earlier draft of this story stated that this recall had been published in 2024. We’ve since learned the recall was originally announced in 2023.
If you’ve pulled out the blender as part of your New Year’s health routine, don’t hit the power button just yet: The national Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall on 4.8 million smoothie mixers in the U.S., and another 117,000 in Canada.
Sold at Walmart, Target, Costco, and online at BlendJet.com, the near-5 million BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders were sold between October 2020 through November 2023 and reportedly retailed between $50 and $75. (It’s not clear from the CPSC announcement whether price variability occurred between the USA and Canada.)
Dated December 28, 2023, the CPSC’s announcement cites that the BlendJet2 “can overheat or catch fire and the blender blades can break off, posing fire and laceration hazards to consumers.” This recall has been initiated after BlendJet “received approximately 329 reports of the blades breaking while in use, and an additional 17 reports of overheating or fires” and “about 49 reports of minor burns and one report of a laceration injury.” This has resulted in “approximately $150,000” in property damage claims for the San Francisco Bay-based BlendJet Inc., the announcement states.
BlendJet offers a search tool for consumers to check whether their model’s serial number is affected, but in general, the CPSC advises: “Units where the first 4 digits of the serial number are between 5201 and 5542” may be subject to the recall. These codes will appear on the bottom of the blender’s base along with the phrases blendjet2 and The Original Portable Blender.
The announcement says that customers should immediately stop use of the recalled BlendJet 2 and contact the company “for a free replacement.” It also lists details on how customers should submit proof of purchase.
