The recent recall on Lays classic potato chips was an important reminder that common food allergens can turn up in products even when they’re nowhere to be found on the ingredients list. If you opt for vegan ice cream due to milk or egg allergy, you may want to double-check your freezer stock, says the FDA, just as we roll into the weekend.
In a report published on Friday, January 10, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that the Mochi Ice Cream Company LLC is recalling 1,350 cases (six-count boxes each, or 8,100 consumer packages) of My Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet because “it may contain undeclared pasteurized cooked egg white.” The notice warns that individuals with either an allergy or sensitive to eggs could “run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”
Data shared by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) states that food allergies in children have been steadily increasing for decades, most recently rising by 50% between 2007 and 2021—and the Cleveland Clinic says egg allergy is the second most common food allergy experienced by children, with allergic reaction symptoms ranging from hives, coughing, itching to more severe ones such as difficulty breathing or loss of consciousness.
Customers should check for orange 6-count product boxes with My Mochi brand labels in the Peach Mango flavor. The boxes weigh 7.5 ounces and bear lot codes of 337-24 and 341-24.
The recall went into effect after the discovery of the pasteurized egg white without proper disclosure on the packaging, according to the FDA report. A further investigation revealed “a temporary breakdown in the company’s packaging processes.” On the initial recall report, the FDA stated: “There have been 2 reports of minor allergic response reported.”
The My Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet was distributed to retail stores nationwide, according to the FDA. Target has listed its own information page about the recall on the company’s website.
If you have purchased of the affected ice cream product, the recall suggests returning them to the store of purchase and requesting a full refund. Concerned customers can also call My Mochi at 1-844-696-6244.
