Amid a bustling holiday shopping season, Stanley cups have become such a popular gifting purchase that they’ve inspired gift guides built entirely around the company’s offerings. Stanley boasts over $750 million in annual sales, up from $73 million in 2019, CNBC reports.
But today, the company is making headlines for another reason: They’ve issued a major recall affecting 2.6 million of their Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs. Given their popularity and the volume of the recalled units, the items are all but certain to turn up under Christmas trees, in stockings, and as host gifts during the holiday season.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced in an urgent December 12 recall notice that the safety of the mugs has been compromised by a manufacturing error. “These mug’s lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” the notice states. The company has received 91 reports of malfunction globally, including 16 in the United States. In these incidents, the travel mugs’ polypropylene lids have become detached during use, “resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two burn injuries in the US, with 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention,” Stanley states.
The affected mugs are made of double-walled stainless steel and feature the Stanley logo—an image of a crowned bear with wing—on the front and bottom of the products. The items were sold in several colors including white, black and green, and come in three different sizes: 12 oz., 16 oz. and 20 oz.
Consumers can identify the recalled items by looking for the following product identification numbers, which are printed on the bottom of the mugs, as follows.
Switchback:
- 12 ounces: 20-01437
- 16 ounces: 20-01436, 20-02211
Trigger Action:
- 12 ounces :20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
- 16 ounces: 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
- 20 ounces: 20-02034, 20-02746
Made in China and manufactured by the Seattle, Washington-based company PMI WW Brands LLC (doing business as Stanley 1913), the mugs were sold at both brick-and-mortar and online retailers including Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, Amazon, and others. They were distributed between June 2016 and December 2024, retailing for $20 to $50 each.
“We ask all our customers currently in possession of the Switchback or Trigger Action travel mugs to immediately stop use of these products and complete a registration for a free replacement lid,” the company said in a notice to customers. To do so, visit www.Stanley1913TMrecall.expertinquiry.com and enter your product information number and place of purchase.
