Recall on 10 Million Breakfast Foods in USA and Canada Warns of Safety Risk

A recent recall of 9.9 million units of frozen breakfast foods could affect Americans nationwide, as well as our neighbors to the North in Canada.

On October 18, TreeHouse Foods, Inc. issued a voluntary recall affecting frozen waffle products sold nationwide due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), which could potentially lead to Listeriosis. Days later on October 22, the company expanded the recall to include all products manufactured at one facility still within their shelf-life, including frozen toaster waffles, Belgian waffles, and pancake products.

On November 27, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added a risk classification, designating the incident a Class II recall. This indicates “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

As of the most recent press release, no health problems have been linked to the contaminated breakfast foods. However, Listeriosis, a condition caused by exposure to food contaminated with L. monocytogenes, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Vulnerable people, including young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women, and others with weakened immune systems, are at the highest risk of serious illness.

“Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA’s safety report warns.

The affected products of this breakfast foods recall were marketed under various brand names and sold at a range of retailers. The “best by” dates listed on the products are from October 1, 2024 to October 11, 2025. These include but are not limited to the following products and UPC codes:
